"36 Drill"
(The number 36 reflects the total number of games we would play to make it to the National Championship game,
including the Big 10 tournament games. It can change each year depending on our schedule.)

Length of Time: Five Minutes

Goals: Score 36 as many times as you can in five minutes.
**We would get it four times and then the highest we scored was 17 on the fifth try before time ran out.

Skills: Working on shooting, rebounding, passing, catching, concentration, communication, game-strategy,
and clock mangement.

The Drill: Start with three lines at half court and two balls. The balls start in the middle line which is also the shooting
line. The first group of three starts a three man weave and when the ball returns to the middle line person (who is now
on the wing) they take a shot-either a two point or a three point shot. As they take their first shot, the next group starts.
Once the first group scores, someone from that group throws the ball back to the next person in the middle line. To re-
fill the lines, we try to have them rotate left. (When the clock runs down, the kids will put the three point shooters in the
middle line). Once they reach 36, they begin the drill again at the opposite basket. They must get 36 before they start
to score at the other end.

Scoring: If the person takes a two point shot (we emphasize 10 foot bank shot)
                MAKE: two points
MISS: must be rebound and put back in (lay up) one point
MISS LAY UP: score to zero or drill over

If the person takes a three point shot

MAKE: three points
MISS: rebounded and kicked back out for another attempt
                Second three point shot attempt
                MAKE: three points
MISS: rebounded and put back in (lay up) one point
MISS LAY UP: score to zero or drill over

We emphasize rebounding. The non-shooters go in to rebound with their hands up.
For rebounding a three point attempt, we make sure the non-shooters rebound with their hands up outside the key or top of the foul line - to get long three point rebounds. The shooter can also rebound, but we emphasize holding your follow-through rather than following your shot. It is terrific for communication and concentration.
After they do the drill a couple of times, they will get the concept. Once we go "live", if the ball hits the floor on a rebound without someone making an effort or diving for it, then the score goes back to zero. If they miss a lay up, the score goes to zero. At the beginning of the year, we usually let them keep going even if the score went to zero, but by
mid-December, we would just end the drill.
