Pressure D

Length of Time: Ten Minutes. Running time except for the final minute.

Goals: Pressure "D" is an intensely competitive work session where two relatively even teams work for a final winning score while improving skills and decision making.

Skills: In bounding the basketball vs pressure.
Running to create an angle to pass.
Ball handling to beat pressure defenses.
Moving without the ball to crete a passing lane.
Pivoting and pass faking to improve a passing angle and relieve pressure.
Offensive rebounding and relocating perimeter shooter.
Defensive rebounding.
Defensive ball pressure.
Three point (game-like) shooting.
Making the extra pass to an open shooter.
Offensive spacing awareness.

The Drill: Each team begins play with two players at the offensive side of mid-court
and two defenders in the back court.

Play begins with a jump ball and on the tip, the centers will take position on the offensive side of the mid-court line.
From that point there is no crossing over mid court and players only go to different spots as they sub in or at the discretion of the coach. The offensive team now tries to get their best shot off from the three point range as the defense relentlessly continues to close out on each pass. On an offensive rebound, the ball is quickly relocated to a shooter moving to an open spot. On a score, the three offensive players become back court defenders as the two new offensive players attempt to have a clean inbounds pass and advance the ball to one of the three teammates in the frontcourt.
A ball, stolen in the back court, changes the defense to offense and a turnover will have the coaches or managers on the side court conduct a back court sideline inbounds. Coaches monitor the inbounds situation and make officiating calls as the game progresses.

Scoring: Most of the scoring will be three points for each three pointer. Coaches need to watch for player stepping on or over the three point line and those shots either do count or the coach signals for two points A "line awareness" will be a concern for some shooters If there are not enough three pont shooters on your team to make drill realistic than two point shots should be be allowed and two points give. Another option for the coach would be for the offensive rebounder to follow the shot with an inside score and that basket , as well as lay up, would count for one pint. An awareness of the score and decision for how many points are needed to win will be vital at end of close games.

Also: Both teams must continue to attempt to score until the time has expired. No stalling. The losing team may have an opportunity to et out of running a sprint or sprints at the end by having one player hit a one-and-one free throw. Substituting and having players switch ends during stop action will give players offensive and defensive work.
